Dr. Weersink's research interests are in the effectiveness of environmental policy in the agricultural sector (on environmental quality goals), profitability of farming systems, biophysical simulation and farm optimization models; evaluating consequences of bio-product development on farmers and explaining the dramatic changes in macroeconomics.

His present research projects are: a) Evaluating the consequences of bio-product development on farmers and b) Assessing the effectiveness of environmental policies within the agricultural sector. In the former, the project started by examining whether local bioproduct efforts by provincial governments would benefit Ontariocrop farmers experiencing low output prices. However, the rapid rise in crop prices stemming from global macroeconomic changes has shifted the focus to explaining the reasons for these dramatic changes and their implications for the agricultural sector. The latter project has been his main area of research over the last decade. One part involves assessing the profitability of farming systems and the reasons for their use by farmers. A second component assesses the tradeoffs between environmental quality and farm profitability between farming systems and involves calibrating a biophysical simulation model to predict residual levels and combining it with a farm optimization model. The final part examines the effectiveness of policies to achieve environmental quality goals, including the water allocation policy, wetland policy and carbon policy.
